YouTube is the dominant online destination for user-generated content. But the Google division wants to turn it into an international on-demand movie service in an effort to head off Apple in the digital distribution of film and TV shows.

Google has been emphasizing its advantage of having the world’s most popular search engine and YouTube, the FT said, citing unnamed sources.

“Google and YouTube are a global phenomenon with a hell of a lot of eyeballs – more than any cable or satellite service,” one executive with knowledge of the plans told the FT. “They’ve talked about how many people they could steer to this … it’s a huge number.”

Negotiations have been taking place for a few months, but they have taken on more urgency because Apple could be launching its own counter-move this week. Rumors suggest that Apple will upgrade its ailing Apple TV service this week at a press conference in San Francisco on Sept. 1. Google will likely have to compete with Netflix and Hulu as well.

The Hollywood studios, meanwhile, want to launch new movie services to make up for the decline of DVD movie sales and rentals. The FT said viewers of the Google movie service would stream rather than download movies at a rate of $5 for new films. YouTube has been beta-testing a film rental service since January.

Youtube is today rolling out a new-look screen which displays at the end of every video, showing related videos and further interactions including the ability to “like” and “share” the just-watched clip.

Capping off one of the biggest re-design periods in YouTube’s history, the YouTube team have reportedly begun the roll-out of a refreshed splash screen — which has remained largely unchanged for some time — that features the ability to interact further with the video, bringing it up to scratch with the rest of the new-look site.

The previous iteration of the screen showed less information and didn’t allow users to “like” videos, although the ability to comment and share the video (e.g. embed codes) were shown.

While it’s not showing on all videos just yet, and an official announcement is still pending, select videos across YouTube when visited are now displaying the new screen (there’s a screenshot of the screen below).

The past three months have been extremely hectic for the YouTube team. They’ve rolled out a new mobile site, launched the beta of YouTube Leanback, made the video pages cleaner and simpler, launched a new “Playlist Bar”, support for local music listings, upgraded support for annotations, a new video manager and promotional badges, new embed codes, and support for Google Buzz.

Judging by this screenshot taken by an IE6 user who was watching some videos on YouTube, it appears the Google company will be phasing out support for the browser shortly. I don’t have Internet Explorer 6 installed on my computer, so I can’t verify this first hand, but illogical it seems not and a simple Twitter search shows multiple people confirming the news. Heck, some are even downright ecstatic over the news.

The online video behemoth is pointing to ‘modern’ browsers like Google Chrome (twice on the same page even, unsurprisingly), Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.5 as alternatives.

With the impending move, YouTube follows in the footsteps of that other Web 2.0 poster child, Digg, which recently hinted at wanting to cut support for the browser too. Digg’s User Experience Architect Mark Trammell at the time wrote that the site is strongly considering removing essential features like digging and commenting for IE6 users. He explained that while IE6 users make up around 5% of site traffic, it only accounts for 1% of diggs, buries, and comments.

YouTube so far hasn’t officially communicated about the desire to drop support for IE6, but it’s conceivable that like Digg it would rather have its developers spend time optimizing the service for newer, better browsers than wasting man hours on the oft-despised Microsoft browser. We recently reported that Internet Explorer is losing market share to Firefox and Safari at a rapid pace.
