Reporter’s blog on Chicago sit-in to become book
NEW YORK – A Washington Post reporter’s blog about the six-day occupation of a shuttered Chicago factory will be turned into a book, tentavively titled “Revolt on Goose Island.”
The book, by Chicago-based writer Kari Lydersen, is expected to be released in early 2009. Publisher Melville House will post reports on their Web site, http://www.mhpbooks.com.
“By posting Kari’s dispatches as a kind of a first draft, we can keep the story in the news while benefiting from a lively and interactive online readership,” Melville House publisher Dennis Johnson said in a statement Friday.
Earlier this week, workers agreed to a $1.75 million settlement that ended their occupation, which had become a symbol of labor’s plight nationwide.
About 200 of 240 laid-off workers began their sit-in after Chicago’s Republic Windows & Doors plant gave them just three days’ notice that it was closing. The workers had argued that Republic violated federal law because employees were not given 60 days’ notice and vowed to stay until they received assurances they would get severance and accrued vacation pay.
