Google Flags Whole Internet As Malware

Posted under Google, Security by admin on Saturday 31 January 2009 at 4:06 pm

Google Eerror Rresults

We’re not quite sure what’s going on, but a couple of minutes ago any search result from Google started being flagged as malware with a message stating “This site may harm your computer”. Including Google’s own website as you can see above.

Twitter is abuzz with people reporting the massive error (also look for tags #googmayharm or #googmayhem), and it’s clear that this is happening around the world. Apparently, it’s happening with any browser on any platform too. (more…)

Google Tips Hand on GDrive Plans

GDrive

A Google source code file has given a clear indication that Google is indeed working on its rumored GDrive cloud storage service, and what the company has in mind for the service.

GDrive is reported to be Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) foray into a providing an online storage service. The rumors of its existence date back to 2006, but it has yet to surface officially. This is hardly a green field; in fact, it’s probably fairer to say the online storage market is cluttered with many products, from Carbonite to Mozy to Backblaze to Sugar Sync and many more.  (more…)

Microhoo: What might have been

Microsoft & Yahoo

A year ago Sunday, on February 1, 2008, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told the world his company wanted to buy Yahoo.

Despite months of discussions, the deal never materialized, distressing many Yahoo shareholders and hastening Yahoo’s replacement of CEO Jerry Yang with Carol Bartz. But what if Yang had gotten up on the other side of the bed one day a year ago and led his company to accept the offer?

It’s impossible to know what would have happened, of course. But an exercise in speculation can be illuminating, as Philip K. Dick showed with The Man In The High Castle, a novel in which Nazi Germany and imperial Japan won World War II.  (more…)

Fourteen news organizations, including The Associated Press and The New York Times Co., are urging a federal appeals court to allow online streaming of a hearing in a music downloading lawsuit the recording industry filed against a Boston University graduate student.

The brief filed Thursday in the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals argues that allowing webcasting of the Feb. 24 hearing is in the public interest, and is in keeping with camera access already granted in the courts. (more…)

Googlers who want to revalue their underwater stock options will have to wait until Tuesday for the voluntary employee option exchange program to launch, Google said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday that did not explain why.

The program–which allows allow employees to exchange all or some of their existing stock options for the same number of new options–was scheduled to launch Thursday and end on March 3. Facebook

Now, this is kind of neat: Facebook Connect, the sprawling social network’s universal-login project, has started to come to desktop software. Namely, it’s been hooked up to the Apple photo-management software iPhoto, per a post on the company developer blog.

“We are excited that sharing your photos with the people you care about has become even easier with iLife ‘09, Apple’s new suite of applications that includes iPhoto ‘09,” the post by Facebook platform manager Dave Morin said. “Users of iPhoto ‘09 can easily share and tag photos from iPhoto directly to Facebook. With help from Facebook Connect, photo tags from iPhoto ‘09 can be added to Facebook and generate Facebook notifications. Additionally, Mac users can update Facebook News Feed and alert friends anytime they update their websites using Apple’s iWeb ‘09 application.” (more…)

Iphone

As might be expected, it doesn’t seem that the iPhone 3G will be Apple’s last iPhone.

MacRumors has discovered code inside the OS X 2.2.1 firmware released earlier this week that describes an “IPhone 2,1″ model. Previous discoveries have shown that Apple uses this labeling nomenclature for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. (more…)

A handful of Firefox tweaks that will double your browser speed

Posted under Security, Software by admin on Thursday 29 January 2009 at 1:35 pm

FireFox

Firefox users take note: You need to do this. Now. As in, this instant. More savvy users are probably already familiar with editing Firefox’s configuration file but whether you’re a computer rookie or a seasoned veteran, Gnoted has issued a handful of tweaks that really get Firefox cooking. As much as we all love the fox, it can get a bit slow on occasion – especially if you’re like us and have 35 open tabs spread across four windows at any given time. By tweaking the way Firefox handles some caching functions, you can dramatically improve page load speed and even prevent Firefox from hogging your system resources while minimized. If you don’t currently have any experience playing with your configuration file, don’t be scared. Just follow the simple instructions, take your time and if you want a security blanket to squeeze, jot down each setting before you change it so you can always restore the default configuration if need be. So without further ado, hit the jump and get tweaking – just remember to restart Firefox when you’re done. (more…)

Browser War: IE8 vs Chrome vs Opera vs Firefox 3

Browser

Soon after our first impression on the Internet Explorer 8 RC1, we decided to do the inevitable, a browser comparison with long time rivals Firefox, Opera, and the latest kid on the block, Chrome.

Note that this is not a review to find out which amongst these is the best browser around. It would be unwise to do such a comparison because, eventually, it boils down to personal choices, and for the same reason, there will always be controversy and related chest thumping about how “my” browser betters “yours.” Therefore, this is just a rehash of the features and drawbacks of these four mainstream browsers available as of today.
