BBC iPlayer now available on Mac

The BBC has created a version of the iPlayer that works with both Mac and Linux computers.

The two systems, which have been able to stream BBC programmes via the iPlayer for a year, will now be able to handle downloads.

On YouTube, music label earns ‘tens of millions’

YouTube’s traffic machine may finally be turning into a cash machine.

For the first time, there are signs that YouTube is driving significant revenue for itself and some of the video site’s partners. In an interview with CNET News this week, Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group’s eLabs, said the largest of the top recording companies is bringing in “tens of millions of dollars” from YouTube.

“(YouTube) is not like radio, where it’s just promotional,” said Caraeff, who heads up Universal’s digital group. “It’s a revenue stream, a commercial business. It’s growing tremendously. It’s up almost 80 percent for us year-over-year in the U.S. in terms of our revenue from this category.”

Microsoft releases its first iPhone app

Is it possible some at Microsoft find the iPhone a more attractive platform than the software giant’s own Windows Mobile?

Engineers in the company’s Live Labs have released the company’s first application for Apple’s popular smartphone–even before making it available on Microsoft’s own mobile platform. Seadragon Mobile, which was added to Apple’s App Store on Saturday, is a free image-browsing app that allows users to quickly “deep zoom” images while online and is intended to demonstrate what is possible with a mobile platform.

Reporter’s blog on Chicago sit-in to become book

NEW YORK – A Washington Post reporter’s blog about the six-day occupation of a shuttered Chicago factory will be turned into a book, tentavively titled “Revolt on Goose Island.”
